Ubisoft is one of the biggest gaming companies out there and is responsible for creating a number of legendary video games over the past few decades. Without this French publisher, the gaming industry wouldn’t have managed to achieve the heights it has.
However, there’s no denying the fact that the last couple of years have been a nightmare for Ubisoft. All of its recent games have been a bust, and there’s a Tencent takeover on the cards. Even though it’s a terrible situation, the French publisher can still make a return by reviving its Fortnite killer from the Ghost Recon franchise.
Ubisoft’s downfall in recent years can be blamed on the fact that the company is focusing heavily on its biggest franchises. If it hadn’t given up on innovating and coming up with new games, it would’ve flourished. One of the many games that the company canceled was none other than Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Frontline.
Back in 2020, Ubisoft celebrated the Ghost Recon franchise’s 20th anniversary and revealed Ghost Recon Frontline. It was a class-based battle royale title that had been in the works for more than three years.
For the first time in the franchise’s history, there was a game that allowed more than 100 players to jump into the same match and battle it out. One of the biggest appeals of the game was its tactical gameplay, which Ghost Recon fans couldn’t get enough of in previous titles. The French publisher promised that the title would expand upon the franchise’s core points.
Unfortunately, the game was canned in 2022. Frontline‘s cancellation was revealed during the company’s Q1 fiscal earnings call as reported by Wccftech, where it was revealed that the game was canceled due to “uncertainty of the economic environment.” Ubisoft didn’t see a future for Frontline due to the fact that its reception wasn’t received well by the community
The main issue was that by the time Frontline was released, the battle royale genre was too saturated and fell out of popularity. However, Fortnite‘s popularity in 2025 proves that there’s still a market for such a genre of games as long as they’re fun and interesting to dive into. Seriously, Epic Games is pulling millions of players on a daily basis and has collaborated with everything under the sun.
Ubisoft should take a look at Fortnite‘s model of success and replicate it with a revived Frontline game. There are many game modes and features the company can look into, but most importantly, it needs to focus on crossovers.
Everyone in the gaming industry agrees that 2024 was the worst year in Ubisoft‘s entire history. With a number of massive flops, leadership changes, and pressure from investors, the company is barely hanging on and is now depending upon Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which is all set to hit the shelves in February 2025.
Originally, Shadows was supposed to be released in 2024, but Ubisoft decided to delay the game due to the massive backlash from the community. Players felt that the title wasn’t doing justice to the Japanese culture and had inaccuracies in weapon design and architecture.
The biggest disappointment for many in the community is that Shadows features a black samurai protagonist. It’s great to see that the French publisher is breaking norms, but featuring such a character ends up compromising the historical authenticity.
Let’s hope that by delaying Shadows, the company has finally figured out what’s been going wrong and can fix it. Otherwise, it won’t be long before one of the most reputable studios ends up like Firewalk Studios after Concord‘s legendary failure.
With that said, do you think there’s any other franchise or game Ubisoft needs to give a shot again? Let us know in the comments.
